On October 22nd, the sophomores were privileged to be taught the effects of driving while impaired or distracted by three Summit police officers. The officers explained in detail how operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and drugs can affect the ability to drive. To put the sophomores’ skills to the test, the gym was turned into an obstacle course that the students had to complete while wearing drunk goggles. Completing this test was difficult for all of the sophomores, as almost every sophomore crashed into a cone numerous times. While on the course, dodgeballs (which represented pedestrians) were thrown at the students to measure their steering abilities. After driving with drunk goggles, the students were given the task of texting while driving the go kart to see if they could multi-task. Although this activity was fun for all the participants, it taught the sophomores the dangers of driving while impaired or distracted.
