Movie Review: Interstellar (2014) —- SPOILER ALERT —-

Adam Lewis, Staff Writer

Interstellar, a space mystery thriller, has garnered numerous positive reviews from critics based on its creativity and is considered Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece. I do not see it. There is a fine line between creative genius and an idea that gets lost in irrationality. This film is the latter.

Now, I am not saying that Christopher Nolan is a hot mess, but this movie was horrendous. The film includes one too many plot twists. As a movie watcher, I look forward to plot twists because they add a new element to the movie. However, this movie did not have that same effect. The plot twists were outlandish and did not help the plot in the least bit. Every plot twist incorporated in the movie took away from the actual point of the movie. If anything, these events confused the viewer.

The general plot of the movie was McConaughey’s character (Cooper) was a former NASA astronaut. He is then brought in for a mission to explore a wormhole in space and explore three potential man-friendly planets. Essentially, the mission goes haywire and the crew starts to question the data on each planet and each other. After a long and tiresome affair with a cameo from Matt Damon, McConaughey decides to finally return to Earth. However, McConaughey is greeted back with the knowledge that his daughter is now forty years older than him is on her deathbed.

The performances were solid, but nothing memorable. Matthew McConaughey plays a former NASA pilot who is sent into space with a team of researchers through the wormhole and across the galaxy to find where could be mankind’s next home. McConaughey reverted to his roots (The Angels in the Outfield McConaughey era) instead of continuing his line of extraordinary performances like True Detective and Dallas Buyers Club. There was no emotion integrated into performance, especially during the ending of the film. The conclusion that consisted of his daughter was odd and unnecessary.

Although Interstellar cinematic features are superb, the whole body of the movie ,including the acting and storyline, were poorly constructed. Besides the film’s cinematography, there is absolutely no reason that this movie should be considered for any significant awards.
