Fencing Team Weekly Update

Michael Weinhoffer, Staff Writer

The fencing team’s season is coming to a close, and the recent meets have shown that this team has potential to prosper. At the mid-season tournament, the District Championships, held on January 25th, the team had numerous victories over opponents such as Somerville, Millburn, and Watchung Hills. Unfortunately, no one was able to qualify for the afternoon round of the all-day tournament, but it was a excellent learning experience for the abundance of first-years fencers on the team. The next meet on the 27th against Newark Academy was cancelled due to a snowstorm. On January 29th, the team faced Columbia High School at the prestigious New Jersey Fencing Alliance Fencing club. The fact that Columbia has one of the best fencing teams in the state did not intimidate our team, which earned some crucial upsets. The MVP of the meet against Columbia High School would be freshman Dean Gillette, who was put in the final round of meet and dominated his superior opponent. The next and final meet of the season is the Prep Championships, which will be held on February 14th.
