The Future of the Brooklyn Nets

Richard Imossi, Staff Writer

From the very beginning of the 2015-2016 NBA season, the Brooklyn Nets have been struggling. They started off the season with seven straight losses before finally notching their first win by beating the Houston Rockets. Although the Nets were expected to be worse than last season, they were not expected to be this bad. Lower expectations were due, in part, to the departure of Deron Williams, their highly skilled point guard. Although Jarrett Jack is a good replacement player, the Nets need a better player to recover for the loss of Deron Williams.

Unfortunately, a playoff berth seems unlikely for the Brooklyn Nets, considering the current state of the team. However, a few changes to the Brooklyn Nets roster could revitalize them and return them to their winning ways. The Nets have two dominant big men in Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young, but the Nets simply have too many other issues. At the conclusion of this basketball season, the Nets need to seriously consider acquiring a higher caliber point guard. Possibilities are Greivis Vasquez and Jeremy Lin, who will be free agents at the close of the season. If the Nets do not manage to get either point guard in free agency, the Nets have the 34th pick of the NBA draft. With this pick, they can possibly draft Gary Payton II, the son of NBA great, Gary Payton. Payton II is having a great year at Oregon State University averaging 16.5 PPG, 8.2 RPG, and 5.5 RPG. Payton II is known for his lockdown defense and finishing above the rim in transition, which are skills the Nets need. With Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young and their developing young star Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, all the Nets need is solid point to make them a playoff team again.
