Worminators 2: ATLAS

Nicholas Looney, Staff Writer

Last month, I wrote an article called “Attack of the Worminators.” At that point in time, I thought the roboworms were our biggest threat. Boy, was I wrong.

Boston Dynamics, a company owned by Google, recently unveiled their newest version of their robot ATLAS. The five foot nine, one hundred and eighty pound robot is astounding the world and has over two million views on its unveiling video on YouTube. This version is much lighter than its predecessor, and can now operate inside and outside. Not only can it move in scarily human ways that keep it from falling over, but if it does fall, ATLAS now has the ability to get back up extremely fast. That may not seem particularly exciting, but these capabilities are revolutionary. ATLAS also does not have wires or cables, unlike its past version, allowing it to roam freely. It also uses lasers as a targeting system. Now, by a targeting system, I mean sensors to track where it is walking towards. But I’m just saying, I bet those lasers would make it very easy to aim a human death machine… Anyway, ATLAS has several other cool features, including opening doors, picking things up, and setting them down. Since robots can’t feel pain, ATLAS can be used for search and rescue in situations that would be dangerous for humans. Also, in the video, to test ATLAS’s capabilities, a man repeatedly pushes ATLAS down. Sounds like motivation to take over the world and destroy all humans… If only worms were the least of our problems.
