Automatron Review: Fallout 4’s First DLC

Michael Wandel, Staff Writer

So, it’s been a few months and the honeymoon phase for me and Fallout 4 is over. I’m not going to look at Automatron with rose-colored glasses, but rather I’m going to say what this DLC is.

Automatron tasks the player with hunting down the “Mechanist,” a villain from Fallout 3 that has been sending out attack robots all over Boston. During this DLC the player is introduced to new types of robots such as the “servomechs” and will acquire new weapons and armor like the Tesla Rifle and robot armor. Automatron has an interesting beginning; having the player track down the coordinates of the Mechanist and taking the player to new locations around the map. However, it quickly devolves into quick kill-and-grab missions without that much depth. However, after a few missions of that the player must delve into the Mechanist’s lair.

This portion of the DLC was really cool as robots would come from everywhere and make the combat engaging. The final fight with the Mechanist is a mosh pit of robots and a great final encounter with the Mechanist. This DLC does not have a large amount of character development and when it does it falls off topic quickly. However, when the main quest is over there is little to do. The only radiant quest available after the DLC gives little return. The coolest part of the DLC is the robot building aspect of it.

You can create any type of robot you want, such as a giant tank robot that shoots nukes or a swift robot with a flaming sword that goes invisible. Your mind can go crazy with all of the options available. And, with mods this could be greatly expanded. One underwhelming aspect of this DLC is its length, which is only 3-4 hours based on your level. I literally beat the DLC in one sitting. For its price, Automatron is a mixed bag of gameplay with its new robot building mechanics and small time that it takes to beat. I believe that while Automatron does not live up to the gigantic and epic standards of Fallout New Vegas’s DLC it is still a little interesting DLC that adds some really cool mechanics. I don’t like adding blank out of ten scores so I’ll give it a robot out of robot. You can pick up Automatron for $10. Decide if you wish to take on the Mechanist yourself in AUTOMATRON!
