Mets Eliminated from Playoffs
October 11, 2016
Noah “Thor” Syndergaard came to Citi Field ready to pitch. The only problem was that the rest of his team didn’t come ready to bat. This might be because Madison Bumgarner pitched nine scoreless innings allowing the Giants to win the game. He never faced many obstacles and was easily able to prevent any Met from scoring the entire game.
But first Noah Syndergaard threw 7 scoreless innings including 10 strikeouts. Despite the Mets not getting the W, this man deserves a lot of credit for the great game he had. Curtis Granderson deserves some credit for a great defensive play when he sacrificed himself into the wall to make the catch which prevented a run from scoring. In the 8th inning, Mets Reliever Addison Reed got himself into trouble when he loaded the bases but was somehow able to get himself out of the jam to leave the scored tied at 0.
In the 9th inning, the Mets opted to pitch their closer despite the game still being tied at 0. Jeurys Familia had a fantastic season this year with 51 saves. However, he let two men on to the plate and a man named Connor Gillaspie. Gillaspie hit a 3 run homerun to give the Giants a 3-0 lead. The crowd which was boisterous the entire game became silent in pure shock. Familia was able to eventually end the inning but the Mets were never able to recover in the bottom of the ninth and didn’t even score one run.
The Giants will head to Chicago to play the best team in baseball; the Cubs.
A lot of people have decided to start playing the blame game on the Mets side calling out Familia and left fielder Yoenis Céspedes. Unfortunately for the Mets, 2016 was not a year that the Mets could likely make a deep postseason run as four out of their six-man pitching rotation were out for the season injured along with their 3rd baseman and captain David Wright. The Mets will now look to 2017 and work to keep their players healthy for next year.
