Champions League Week 2 Review

After two games, nothing is confirmed, but the groups are starting take shape in the Champions League.

Notable Matches:

Dortmund vs Real Madrid: Dortmund earned a draw in their second week game. They started off much stronger than Real but Ronaldo got on the scoresheet first. Aubameyang replied in the 43rd minute before Varane put Real 2-1 in the 63rd. Dortmund kept pressuring Real Madrid and eventually scored the equalizer in the 87th minute. American Christian Pulisic assisted Andre Schurrle to earn the point.

Dinamo Zagreb vs Juventus: Juventus demolished Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 away from home. Pjanic Higuain, Dybala, and Dani Alves all scored. Juventus picked up an important three points after drawing their first game with Sevilla.

Atletico Madrid vs Bayern Munich: In a repeat of one of the semi-final matches last year, Atletico got a narrow victory over Bayern. Bayern kept the ball for a majority of the match, but Atletico were always well organized to keep the ball out of their net. Carrasco scored from outside the box in the 35th minute to seal the win. Griezmann missed a penalty in the 84th minute but it didn’t matter as Atletico were able to keep Bayern out for the rest of the game.

Celtic vs Manchester City: In one of the most exciting matches so far, Celtic drew with City 3-3. Dembele scored the opening goal in the 3rd minute of the game, but Celtic would only keep the lead for 9 minutes as Fernandinho equalized. Only 8 minutes later a shot deflects off of Sterling to give Celtic a 2-1 lead. In the 28th minute Sterling made amends by scoring in the right net. After 19 minutes of solid defending from both sides, Moussa Dembele scored his second goal. Nolito came to the rescue by scoring off of Aguero’s assist in the 55th minute. This draw ended City’s impressive winning streak.

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Barcelona: Barcelona edged this one away to Monchengladbach. Thorgan Hazard scored the game’s first goal in the 34th minute. It took Barcelona until the 65th to get the equalizer. Turan scored, assisted by Neymar. Only 9 minutes later, Pique scored the game winner. This result sends Barcelona to the top of the group, and Monchengladbach to the bottom.
