The 2016 MLS Cup Final pitted Toronto FC against the Seattle Sounders. Because Toronto had more points in the regular season, they hosted the final.

Toronto dominated most of the final. The first big chance of the game came in the 2nd minute when Altidore dragged his shot just wide. In the 15th minute, Osorio took a shot from the inside of the box but it was saved by Frei. Early in the second half, Giovinco got off a shot in the box but it hit the side netting. The Sounders had no shots on target throughout regular time but they were able to keep Toronto from scoring. In extra time, Altidore’s great header in the box was saved by a scrambling Stefan Frei.

The final went to penalties. In the initial round, both teams scored 4 out of 5 penalties, with Bradley of Toronto missing and Fernandez missing for Seattle. In the sudden death round, Justin Morrow his the crossbar with his penalty. With a chance to win Seattle the cup, Román Torres stepped up to the spot. He sent his penalty to the right of Toronto keeper Irwin to win the Seattle Sounders their first MLS Cup in history.
