Wife of Orlando Shooter Arrested
January 17, 2017
On Monday, January 16, the FBI arrested Omar Mateen’s wife, Noor Salman on charges connected to the Pulse nightclub shooting. Her charges include aiding and abetting his attempts to support ISIS, and obstruction of justice.
A source added that the agencies that jointly prosecute terrorism cases wanted to, in addition, charge Salman with directly supporting ISIS. Acting Assistant Attorney General Mary McCord, however, refused to support this additional charge.
FBI agents from the San Francisco field office arrested Salman outside her home in Rodeo, California. She did not resist arrest, according to law enforcement sources, and is set to make her first appearance in federal court on Tuesday, January 17, in San Francisco.
Salman had moved to Contra Costa County following the shooting, and after her initial appearance in federal court is to be flown to the Middle District of Florida—the jurisdiction in which the shooting occurred.
After being questioned about the shooting and her husband immediately following the event, investigators became suspicious that she was not telling the truth about her husband’s plan to execute the shooting. Ergo, the investigation of her connections to the crime had been ongoing since June of last year to Monday.
Orlando Police Chief John Mina stated: “Nothing can erase the pain we all feel about the senseless and brutal murders of 49 of our neighbors, friends, family members and loved ones. But today, there is some relief in knowing that someone will be held accountable for that horrific crime.”
