Varsity Swimming Update #3
February 23, 2017
After great results at the Union County Championships, the OP Swim Team dove into their next two meets with great results against Cranford and Madison, respectively.
On January 24th, the team traveled to Cranford looking to build on their success in Rutgers just two days prior. They did just that, winning by a score of 101-69. Aidan Herrighty was a big part of this success with wins in the 200 Free and 100 Back. Patrick Heffernan added a victory in the 100 Free, while Ian Ellmer won the 500 Free. Finally, Andrew Meisner came in first in the 200 IM.
After this great success, the team traveled to Madison for Senior Night. It was a great night for the seniors and all of the swimmers with a final score of 101-68. Senior John Cannilla took first in the 50 Free. Patrick Hefferan won the 200 IM and the 100 Fly. Andrew Meisner led the team in the distance races with wins in the 200 Free and 500 Free. Ian Ellmer claimed first in the 100 Free and 100 Back. Finally, the 200 meter Medley Relay and 400 meter Free Relay also secured first place finishes. These great races made this a great final duel meet for the OP Seniors.
After these two success, the swim team was full of energy for the Prep Championships on February 7th. There were many great swims by many great swimmers that resulted in a 4th Place finish in the A-Bracket, out of seven teams, and 5th overall, out of all 15 teams. Michael Cantaluppi had a best time in the 100 Fly with a 104:33. Joe Nowacki continued to make strides in the 100 Breast with a best time of 107:85. Nick Kardis continued with his success in the 100 Back with a 106:87. As always, John Cannilla, Patrick Heffernan, Ian Ellmer, Aidan Herrighty, and Andrew Meisner led the team in terms of points with great swims all across the board. The team hopes to continue their success on February 20th in the semifinals of the state tournament against the winner of the Quarterfinal involving Morristown-Beard and Gloucester Catholic.
