Conference Championship + Super Bowl Predictions
January 22, 2019
This upcoming weekend of football games will be one of the most exciting conference championship Sundays in a while. We have two teams with veteran QB’s, looking for another ring to add to both of their hall of fame resumes in Drew Brees and Tom Brady. Then, we have two young, talented QB’s looking to rise to the occasion and bring their teams to the Super Bowl after having phenomenal seasons in Pat Mahomes and Jared Goff. This past week, I sent out a Google Form to the sophomore class asking them who they thought would win the games this weekend (Chiefs vs. Patriots and Rams vs. Saints), as well as who they thought would win the Super Bowl and who will be the MVP. Although MVP answers varied between players, the answers for the games this weekend were quite interesting.
Of the 43 sophomores that filled out the form, 60% believed that the Saints would win on Sunday, and only 51% of kids believed that the Patriots would win. These responses show the equality between all the teams, and the excitement building up for the weekend, as these games should be extremely fun ones. As to the Super Bowl winner, another equal consensus was made, as 30% of people thought the Patriots would win, 28% thought the Saints, 26% the Chiefs, and 16% the Rams. Surprisingly, the people believe that the Patriots would win, although Vegas believes that the Patriots have the worst odds to win the Super Bowl from this point.
Personally, I believe that the Saints and Patriots will win the games this weekend. Although Sean McVay, coach of the Rams, will have planned something special against Brees and stud receiver Michael Thomas, I don’t think the Rams will be able to hold up against the rush-pass threat of Alvin Kamara. I think Kamara eats up during this game and helps the Saints hold off the young Rams team to advance to the Super Bowl. In the AFC, I am expecting a shootout between the Chiefs and the Patriots. I think that the key for the Patriots to win is to maintain possession for as long as possible to keep the ball out of Mahomes hands. If they do that, I believe that they will win and I think that is what’s going to happen. For the winner of Super Bowl LIII, I think the Saints will pull off the win on a final drive touchdown. I believe that these teams match up very well against each other, but I think that the winner of the game comes down to whose defense performs better in the late minutes of each half. I think that the Saints defense will step up big time this game, and secure the win for Brees and the Saints. I also believe that Brees performs up to his potential and takes home MVP of Super Bowl LIII, concluding his MVP caliber season.
