An Interview with Track Star Sam DeMarinis

Jonathan deMontagnac, Staff Writer

Today we have a chance to learn more about winter track season and one of the sprinters, Sam DeMarinis. So far the track team has had two meets, of which they have medaled in two races. In these meets, they face some really good teams (such as CBA and Union Catholic), but they don’t let this phase them. Sam has attended Oratory for the last three years and has run track for the last two.

Would you want to run track in college? If so what is your dream college?

I think it would be cool to run track in college but I don’t think I could. My dream college for track would either be the University of Oregon or the University of Miami.

What is one word that you would use to describe yourself? Why did you pick this word?

I would describe myself as hardworking. This is because I’m always pushing to do my best both academically and on the track.

Was there a major influence or something that swayed you chose to run track?

I started watching the Olympics on TV when I was younger, and I always thought that track and field was fun to watch. It never really occurred to me that I could do it myself until the end of freshman year, and I decided to go for it the following year.

Who would you say is the biggest influence in your life currently for school and track?

I would say that the biggest influence in my life for school and track is probably Matthew Boling. He is a sprinter at the University of Georgia who runs an insane 200m time, and he inspires me to get better.

Do you have any pregame routines? If so what are they?

I try to just chill out before races, but usually, I’m pretty nervous. I make sure to listen to music and do the same stretches that I usually do before every race.

Do you currently have a personal goal (or goals) for this season? If so what are they?

I’m hoping that I can get my 200m time closer to my PR during spring last year, which was a low 24.
