Fencing Updates

Marcus Lee, Staff Writer

Though often overlooked, the fencing season is currently underway, and the team is looking strong as ever.  In the first competition of the season, we lost 14-13 against Livingston, which shows we have a lot of potential as a team to have a strong season.  I interviewed Brandon Scortino, a saber user and number 2 in his class.

How do you think that the team is performing currently and what do you think can be achieved?

– The team has made great strides with everything considered. Many students and athletes are new to the sport and have already shown great interest and motivation to learn and become strong competitors in the team. Additionally, compared to the challenges of previous seasons, I think the team shows great potential to be a very strong team considering the great progress this year under our great coach, Sekou.

What is the best part about being on the fencing team?

– The best part has to be the great team environment and our amazing coach, Sekou.

What are some of the biggest accomplishments of the team this year?

– While the season is still young, we have a great number of new team members who have joined and I look forward to some strong showings in competitions this year.

How can we as OP students support the team?

– Showing up to the competitions we have is a great way to show your support for the team. While most meets are away at other schools, Oratory did host one last year so I would expect another possibly this year. Also asking the team members about their weapon and their progress in the sport is a great way to encourage and support the team just in the school day.
