This Wednesday, I had the opportunity to sit down with OP’s newest English teacher, Mr Harrison. I was able to ask him a few questions about his life and why he chose OP!
Q. What is your previous work experience as a teacher
A. I spent 14 years teaching in Manhattan. At that school, I was able to teach English, Woodworking, and Philosophy. I then taught in Brooklyn. Oratory will be the third school I have taught at.
Q. What made you want to come to Oratory?
A. The all-boys aspect was very appealing to me. I feel that in many ways it can be easier to teach to all guys. During my interview for the job, I learned that all of the administrators taught a class. I feel that that is an important sign of a good high school. I also went to a school very similar to OP in my Freshman and Sophomore years of high school. Finally, I think that I will be able to talk about more intellectual things at Oratory. These things captivate me and I hope to share my thoughts with my students.
Q. Now that you are at Oratory, is there anything you hope to become involved in?
A. I would love to start a woodworking club. I have also spoken to Mr. Hill in regard to creating a rock band. I believe he plays the bass and I enjoy playing the guitar.
Q. What is one goal that you have set for yourself this school year?
A. I would love to learn more about sports. I noticed that a lot of the student body here is passionate about their sports. I’ve never been a sports person, but I want to learn more so I can form even better relationships with my students.
Q. What is your favorite part about Oratory thus far?
A. I have noticed that everyone at OP is positive. Nobody is ever mad. That has not always been the case at my previous schools. It is pretty cool to come to work every day knowing that my students will be positive and energetic.
OP is lucky to have Mr. Harrison on their staff to share his passions and talents with the students. Thank you to Mr. Harrison for taking the time to sit down for this interview!
