The most disappointing and surprising teams in the MLB:
Disappointing
Although the season is not over yet some teams have just not lived up to their preseason hype. Both of the most disappointing teams in the MLB this season came out of New York. The Yankees and Mets both projected over 100 wins this season.
Just last season the Yankees had 99 wins. They added a big-name arm in Carlos Rodon and resigned captain Aaron Judge in the offseason. They didn’t get any worse, so there was lots of hype for this team to make a deep playoff run. They started off on a good pace, then injuries plagued the team for a good two to three months. Aaron Judge, Nestor Cortes, and Carlos Rodon went down for significant periods of time. The Yankees fell below five hundred and had a ten-game losing streak. That was the end of their season. The Yankees were officially eliminated from playoff contention this past Sunday.
The Mets were a great team last year with a disappointing ending. That disappointment led into their next season as Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer failed to produce. They ended up trading all of their high-value pieces because of their fall-off. The Mets had lots of hype and did not live up to it. They technically still have a chance at the playoffs, but very unlikely.
Surprising –
The Milwaukee Brewers have been a surprising team, as last season they weren’t terrible. They went under the radar and didn’t sign many players. The weak NL Central presents an opportunity for the Brewers to sneak into the postseason. Their former young star Christian Yelich has come back to life, lighting up this offense. They’re pitching is always excellent. They are on track to win their division and might be a sneaky team in the playoffs.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are a team full of young talent such as ROTY candidate Corbin Carroll. This team is currently in a wild card spot, but it is a tight race. The Diamondbacks were awful last season. Their young energy has propelled them into a spot where nobody wants to face them come October.
