Disney+ first launched on November 12th, 2019, and has since become one of the most popular streaming services in the world, boasting 146.7 million subscribers globally as of Q3, 2023, according to Statista.com. After many updates through the years, it’s time for an objective review of the platform.
So what makes Disney+ popular is what I like to call “the Big 3”: Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel. These three franchises attract different audiences and provide Disney+ with something that platforms like Netflix or Amazon Prime lack: well-established brand names. So while Netflix and Prime may have highly popular shows they don’t have the in-house brand names that Disney has.
Firstly, Pixar, the animation company that was acquired from Disney a few years ago has contributed hugely to the service. It appeals mainly to younger viewers and families. This helps Disney out with its own animation. They have dominated the animation industry for decades, and continue to do so with their emergence on Disney+.
The other two prominent brand names are Marvel and Star Wars and both have excelled throughout the years. Marvel has dominated the superhero genre for 15 years now and Star Wars has been iconic since its debut in 1977. Star Wars fans can instantly access any show or movie created and new content is consistently added. For Marvel fans, Disney+ offers a comprehensive collection of all the movies and shows that illustrate the depth that Marvel has accumulated throughout the years. Now, the only downside is Marvel’s deal with Sony, preventing the two new Spider-Man movies from being on Disney+.
The major downside for me with Disney+ is the lack of diversification. They have some great brand names but other than that, they don’t have the shows/movies of a Netflix, HBO, or Prime. Still, this is a minor drawback to an overall strong streaming service.
Overall, Disney+ has some strong franchises with a rich history of great movies. However, its primary drawback is a lack of diversification as mentioned. If you’re into Marvel or Star Wars, then Disney+ is great. Still, if you seek the variety of genres and shows that Netflix offers, Disney+ may not be worth it, as it can’t compete in that arena. In conclusion, Disney+ is a solid 9/10 streaming service with a lot to offer.
