Following Oratory’s Soccer season with a record of 7-10-1, their only “tie” coming from a fantastic penalty shootout win against Plainfield in the county tournament, Sean Van Hoven has some words of wisdom after his illustrious varsity career. The Rams had one of the toughest schedules in the state, playing four top-20 opponents and many over .500 teams. Sean led the team in goals this season with 11, and was a leader on and off the field. Some of his more memorable performances include his hattrick against New Providence in an overtime thriller, and his equalizer in states against Pope John. His example of hard work and determination will not be forgotten, and Rams next year will try to replicate his attitude. Here is an exclusive interview with Varsity Soccer Captain, Sean Van Hoven:
How did this year’s team respond to adversity, and what were some things you did to inspire the team?
“I think this year’s team responded very well to the adversity we faced. Although we faced many tough teams, and had some bad games, the team went into every game with a winning attitude. Even playing #1 Delbarton, the team took the field with a positive attitude.”
What was the most memorable moment from your Varsity career at Oratory?
“Definitely the New Providence game, because I had a great game and we won the game in overtime. The game did not feel real to me, because it was everything I have always wanted from a performance in a game. I am very grateful for the opportunity to play in games like that, and have a supporting team to help me do it.”
What did you do to leave a lasting impact on Oratory Soccer?
“I just tried my best in every instance I could. I think what made our team fun for me this year is the hard work everyone put into the team. I hope I taught everyone on the team that hard work pays off, because every practice and game I strived to be better and make our team better. “
Can we get a preview for OP footy next year?
“I think the returning guys are going to do well next season, because now they have experience, and I hope I left them with some confidence for the upcoming season. I truly believe that they will do well and have a really fun season with each other. “
