The 22-year-old Shortstop from Delbarton High School played outstanding defense last season. He was awarded the gold glove over established players such as Corey Seager and Bo Bichette. Although his hitting was very underwhelming, Volpe’s unmatched speed and underrated power still allowed him to become the first Yankee rookie to reach the prestigious 20/20 club. This record made up for shortcomings in batting average.
Volpe had a .970 fielding average which was best in the AL. He had 17 errors which may seem like a lot, but in a 162-game season that is pretty impressive. He was making the routine plays look even more effortless, and the hard plays as well. Some of his plays ever closely mirrored Derek Jeter in his rookie year. He had 15 defensive runs saved above average which shows his ability to make the hard plays to save runs. All in all, Volpe was amazing, and with hard work, he can be even better.
