After starting the season with a 1-5 record, the Denver Broncos have seemingly become a playoff caliber team out of nowhere. After last year’s poor season with the Broncos, Super Bowl champion quarterback Russel Wilson was deemed washed by many. In the 2022 season, the Denver Broncos placed last in their division, finishing with a 5-12 record. This was a huge disappointment to Denver fans, as the team gave up many players, picks, and a lot of cap space for Russel Wilson to be their quarterback. According to Statmuse.com, Russel finished the 2022 season with a passer rating of 84.4 with 3,524 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 15 games. This was a huge drop-off from Russel’s 2021 season, as he had a passer rating of 103.1.
The start of the 2023 season looked no better for Broncos fans. The Miami Dolphins set a scoring record for their franchise, scoring 70 points on the Broncos in the third week of the NFL season. The Denver Broncos had lost five games in the first six weeks of their season. However, the Broncos have been on an unexpected winning streak in their last five games, beating teams like the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Broncos currently have a record of 6-5, placing themselves second in their division.
Russel Wilson has been playing phenomenal; he currently has a passer rating of 103.4, which is better than his 2021 passer rating when he was with the Seattle Seahawks. In the past eleven games, he has passed for 20 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. He has already passed more touchdowns this season than he had in all fifteen games last season.
The once “trash” Broncos now have a bright future ahead of them. They have a veteran quarterback that is able to elevate the young stars that surround him, including talented wide receiver Jerry Jeudy. It is hard not to root for the underdog in sports, and many NFL fans can agree that Russel Wilson and the Broncos will become more than just a Cinderella story.
