With Selection Sunday just over a week away, I wanted to preview some sleeper teams that you should be on the lookout for when making your bracket!
Indiana State (26-5)
Seed Projection: 11
The Sycamores have been on a tear this season. This is a mid-major program that has not been relevant since Larry Bird now has 6 seeds shivering. Why are teams scared of the Sycamores? They have 5 players averaging 10+ PPG and 3 of those players are averaging 16+PPG. That type of feat is incredible. They are led by 6’10 Center Robbie Avila known as the “College Jokic” who has the potential to be a March Madness legend.
Grand Canyon (26-4)
Seed Prediction: 12
The Grand Canyon Antelopes are another team I would not want to play in March. Tyron Grant-Foster is the leader of this squad averaging 19.4 PPG and 5.9 RPG. A very flashy squad that only lost to #17 South Carolina by 7 points.
New Mexico (21-8)
Seed Prediction: 10
The New Mexico Lobos have played more competition than the other 2 schools that have been listed so far, The Mountian West Conference is absolutely loaded. They have 6 possible teams with hopes of making March Madness. The Lobos have 3 guards averaging 15+ PPG. Good guard play in March leads to wins and having 3 guards averaging over 15 a game is a scary sight.
Colorado (20-9)
Seed Prediction: 9
The Colorado Buffaloes have had some poor games this season in the weak PAC 12 Conference. The Buffs have 5 players who average 10+ PPG. Led by point guard KJ Simpson averaging 20.0 PPG. The Buffs also have a projected Top 5 pick for the NBA Draft Cody Willaims who is averaging 13.7 PPG. Colorado can simply rely on their talent to make a deep run in March.
Nebraska (21-9)
Seed Prediction: 7
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are having an historic season. Beating #1 Purdue earlier this season proved the talent they have and what they are capable of. Japanese sharpshooter Keisei Tominaga leads the Cornhuskers averaging 14.0 PPG. The Huskers are very balanced with 4 guys averaging over 12 PPG. The Huskers can be inconsistent and play way better at home than they do on the road. Do not be surprised if the Cornhuskers get hot in March and make a run.
