The New York Yankees started their season on a road trip to Houston and Arizona. Traditionally, the Yanks have started out at home. Despite this, New York went 6-1, and their only loss was in the second game of the Arizona series. When you look just at the stats you would think how are the Yankees doing so well. They had mediocre pitching and their batting average was not very good. So, let’s get into it.
They hit .238% through seven games which is not very good. But, they had a great amount of walks with 30. They had lots of runners in scoring position from walks and stolen bases. Players also did a great job with sacrifice flies and moving runners over with a ground ball. Their timely hitting in the late innings helped them secure many wins. Their bullpen only let up three runs through this stretch which is huge because the starters let up 14 runs in that span which put them in a bunch of holes early. Their ability to come up big with runners on, and hold opposing offenses to a stall late in games helped them come out with the victory.
They also had some key players contribute in key situations. Anthony Volpe, Oswaldo Cabrera, Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, and Aaron Judge all had timely hits to secure victories. Volpe, Soto, and Cabrera had a great opening series in Houston and didn’t slow down against the D-Backs. They had rally starting hits, and truly played “small ball”. They were also all huge in defense. Soto and Verdugo made game-winning plays, and Volpe continued his gold glove play.
This team is special and I am excited for what is to come!!!!
