Junior Ian Heffernan is one of our lacrosse team’s most important players. Below is a short interview with the three-year varsity starter.
Who inspired you to start playing lacrosse?
I have been playing lacrosse since the first grade. When I was 6 years old, my parents signed me up for lacrosse clinics where I learned the basics of lacrosse like how to pass, how to pick up ground balls, and how to shoot. Then I began playing on my local town team in New Providence. Ever since then, my love for the sport has grown like a cancer. My older brother Kenny also played lacrosse and graduated from Oratory in 2021. I wear the number 23 because of him.
How did you prepare for this spring season?
I stayed committed to my workout routine throughout the fall and winter. By consistently going to the gym, I improved my strength significantly, and in general, I just felt faster and sharper heading into this season. I honed in on my lax skills by going to the field. I especially worked on my shot which helped me get four goals as a defender. Over the summer, I played club for 3D Garden State. I had the opportunity to compete in top tournaments, where I guarded Division 1 committed attackers. The in-game experience helped me improve the most over the offseason.
How did you lead the team as one of the captains?
It felt great being named team captain as a junior. I tried my best to lead the team by example and show underclassmen how to play to the best of their abilities. I took inspiration from last year’s captains. However, I have always seen myself as a leader on the defensive line because it is important to stay organized at the back.
What personal goals do you have for your senior year?
I want to continue gaining muscle and become quicker. I also want to score more goals as a defender. This season I got four goals so getting a few more would be nice. I would like to hit a high GB mark as well. I am also working towards getting All-County Honors.
