Flashback to the last time the Rams beat GL ….. High school soccer in NJ was cut short due to Covid in 2020….The Rams won the Mountain division holding a 10-4 record…OP soccer legend Marcelo Freire was the captain and leading scorer of the team and both him and Sebastian Bjorkesen had a combined effort to beat the Highlanders 1-0 on October 20, 2020.
The Highlanders came out of Cavalero Field winless, as the Rams prevailed in a 3-2 win. GL struck first with a bar down banger of a goal to open up the scoring. Julian Stauffer then retaliated with only 10 minutes left of the first half with his 5th goal of the season to even the Rams up with the Highlanders. The boys were disappointed in allowing a goal, but decided at halftime that it was their offense that would need to do the talking. That being said, with a beautiful pass from senior Aidan Fahy, Henry Griffiths would strike a powerful shot post and in to put the Rams in front 2-1. Senior captain Max Cook then earned his 7th goal of the season in a solo effort to add some much needed insurance to the Rams lead. GL would cut the lead in half with only 6 minutes remaining, but that would be all she wrote for the scoring. Henry, Max, and Julian all finished with a goal a piece as Griffiths and Fahy provided assists as well. This was the first time the Rams beat GL in four years, falling to them seven times before finally getting one in their favor. The Rams improved to a 3-8 record before meeting with Roselle Park in the first round of their county tournament campaign.
