Oratory Prep welcomed its newest teacher and head lacrosse coach, Mr. Bill McCutcheon. Coach McCutcheon grew up in Chatham and attended Chatham High School. He was a multi-sport athlete during his time there, but the lacrosse field was where he shined. He graduated from Chatham High School while earning All-American honors in lacrosse as a senior. He then attended John Hopkins University before transferring to Towson University where his bright career continued. After his playing career, he switched to coaching. He spent time on the lacrosse coaching staffs of both Wagner and Monmouth Universities. McCutcheon says that his favorite moment coaching was when his Monmouth squad won the conference championship and made it to the NCAA tournament.
Coach McCutcheon has coached at all levels, starting his high school career back where he started at Chatham High School. Later he moved to Milburn High School where he was head coach and also taught English for three years. During his time at Milburn, he achieved an impressive 40-20 record and reached two state semi-finals. Coach McCutcheon says the most important part of being a student-athlete is patience and the willingness to want to improve. “Whether that be in the classroom, or on the field, he says, you have to want to be the best version of yourself.” Coach says to be a successful team, “Comradery and playing for something more than yourself” are the most important things to win games.
Off the field Coach McCutcheon teaches English and history, receiving his BA in English from Towson. “I’ve loved English my whole life,” Coach Mac says, “History’s a bit newer for me, but I enjoy learning all about it”. In the classroom and around campus Coach McCutcheon has already left a positive impact. Outside of the classroom coach loves to golf, watch football, and do any kind of exercise. Growing up around Summit, just a few miles away has made coach feel welcomed and at home. “It’s a welcoming place, the people here are what makes it so great”, he said.
Oratory is happy to have Coach McCutcheon as part of our OP community. Coach is eager for the lacrosse season, and is confident that he will resurrect the program and lead them to new heights. Coach’s passion for the game and dedication to improving his players, on and off the field, makes him the perfect fit for our program and school.
