We had the pleasure of sitting down with Oratory Prep’s newest English teacher, Ms. Wyatt, to ask her some questions.
We first asked about her childhood. Ms. Wyatt grew up in the Poconos. She describes it as a place for ski resorts, corny hotels, and a bunch of fun activities to encounter. We then inquired about her education, Ms. Wyatt got her undergraduate degree at George Washington University in Washington D.C. She then went and got her Master’s degree from UC Berkeley. Ms. Wyatt was influenced to become a teacher because of past teachers who impacted her. She wanted to perform as well as they did and leave an impact on students just like the one left on her. She got the idea of becoming an English teacher due to a 5th-grade teacher of hers who taught reading and writing very well and she has been a prolific writer ever since, she wants to have that same influence.
Her start at Oratory was quite unorthodox as she joined the staff during the middle of the first quarter. Ms. Wyatt liked the idea of teaching at an all-boys school and the faith-based aspect that Oratory provides. She finds that Oratory exhibits good energy and positive vibes. She thinks it fosters friendly competition, is very fun, and the atmosphere is very healthy. Ms. Wyatt teaches tenth-grade Honors English as well as AP Language and Composition. She credits a Shakespeare class she took in her junior year of college as why she chose to teach English. Ms. Wyatt says her biggest challenge is adapting to a new school and a new state. In her free time, Ms. Wyatt enjoys attending concerts, going to museums, watching movies, and reading books, with her favorite singer being Kate Bush. Seeing that we had finished reading Macbeth we asked her about her favorite Shakespearean plays, Hamlet is her favorite to read, and The Tempest is her favorite to teach.
A big thanks to Ms. Wyatt for taking the time to do this interview!
