While the days get shorter and the nights get colder, the Mock Trial team has been hard at work after school almost everyday to ensure we claim victory at the county competition this year.
Out of all the extracurricular activities offered at Oratory Prep, Mock trial is by far our most successful. With a record of about 120-29, it is a very prestigious program that boasts both high success and a tightly-knit community. This year, the preparation and practice has not faltered one bit.
The Mock Trial team began preparation in the month of October. While most of this month was spent recruiting new members, it gave us time to go over and become accustomed to this year’s case. As we reconvened, we welcomed our new captain, Joshua D’cruz, who had been elected late last school year. As we began to construct our new team, members from last year who cheered us on from the sidelines stepped up and entered competition for roles.
As November rolled around, we began to solidify our cast, deciding who would be in contention for which role. We worked vigorously both during practice and after school to ensure that we would be ready for our first scrimmage on 12/14. As new members were taught courtroom etiquette, returning members were forced to improve upon their skills to make up for the loss of last year’s seniors. As practices ramped up to four times a week (sometimes everyday for attorneys!), it was clear that Mr. Martin did NOT intend to lose again.
As December rolled around, it was clear we needed more leadership. After a lot of pondering from both Mr. Martin, Mr. Meehan and Joshua D’cruz, Marco Buonaiuto was elected as the second captain. With new directives and authority, we were ready for the upcoming winter scrimmages and Highland Park and Mendham. While we learned a lot from both, we realized we still have a long way to go.
Over winter break, we will be participating in virtual practices to ensure we maintain our edge over the competition. While everyone wants to enjoy break, we must admit that these are essential to becoming better as a team.
As of now, the Mock Trial team looks forward with a hopeful outlook. We will continue to work hard and do our best for the betterment of our team and in respect for each other. While Mock Trial is very demanding and requires many hours after school, I’m very glad with the team and the experience. While I know many aren’t interested in the club, please do check it out. It is never too late to join and be a part of something truly special.
